This song uses an idea from an old 50’s tune called “At the Hop” to create a short melodic phrase that ends with, “hop, hop, hop,” well, at least it is implied. You will in no doubt sense this as you listen to the recording. The tune also follows a little unusual sixteen bar blues progression. This is a medium level piece.
What is Chicken? It’s also known as Bar Tag or Bamboo. It’s a speed game played against an opponent on the parallel bars where they flip their legs and bodies over the bar and run to the end and repeat until one can catch up to the other and tag them. This 6/8 song is one in the collection that highlights the speed of your performers. Basically, take the tempo as fast as students are able to go. This will be a fun and motivating challenge for your kids. It is a medium/advanced level piece.
This piece features two main themes. The lower voices (bass, baritone and tenor) handle one theme and the higher voices (soprano, alto and descant) play the other. The upper voices have the most technically challenging parts; however, this perception is short-sighted once it is realized that the entire song is essentially based on the one short pattern found in the first measure. The tempo of this tune is fast and the melody changes directions often to depict children running around as they play the game. You might even hear some “Flight of the Bumblebee” moments too. This is considered a medium/advanced level piece.
A drum track has been added to these arrangements, however, the songs are complete without the use of drums or other additional percussion.
